Course Descriptions
Literacy
Writing and recognizing the alphabet; sound-spelling correspondences; words that commonly appear in print; reading sentences, paragraphs and simple text written for adult ESL students.
Basic Writing Skills
Writing simple notes, paragraphs and memos; taking telephone messages.
Introductory
Forming simple sentences, questions and responses for basic, everyday communication. This class is for students who speak little or no English.
Beginning 1
Basic vocabulary and synonyms; simple verb tenses; basic conversation skills. For students who can form simple sentences and communicate basic concepts, but who generally understand only when spoken to slowly.
Beginning 2
Using present and past tenses; listening comprehension; speaking; basic-level reading and writing. For students who can communicate about their own lives but still need higher-level grammer and vocabulary.
Intermediate 1
Expanding vocabulary; basic reading comprehension; more complex sentence structure; idiomatic expressions; writing. For students who can communicate their ideas effectively but with grammar mistakes and limited vocabulary.
Intermediate 2
Beginning to speak and understand at a more natural speed; beginning to use more complex grammatical structures; focus on speaking about a wider variety of topics and a vocabulary building. Continued of cus on writing.
Intermediate 3
Writing letters and essays; distinguishing between formal and informal English; reviewing complex grammar. For students who can communicate easily, use complex grammar and read some material written for native speakers.
Advanced
Improving writing and pronunciation skills. For students who can debate, converse, make speeches and presentations, and write essays.
Conversation and Pronunciation (Beginning, Intermediate, and Advanced levels)
Improving pronunciation to help students be understood by native speakers; practicing speaking and listening skills; emphasis on practical, everyday English.
Advanced Writing
Writing essays, stories and letters; personal, business and academic writing; advanced grammar and reading comprehension.
Beginning Spanish
Basic, practical conversation; pronunciation; simple verb tenses; basic grammar. For students who speak little or no Spanish.
TOEFL Preparation
Preparing for the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) through practice tests and discussing questions, problems and concerns; advanced grammar, speaking, writing and vocabulary.
Preparation for Citizenship (tutoring)
Preparing for U.S. Citizenship Exam; learning about U.S. government, politics and history; practice tests and role play. For intermediate to advanced-level students who are legally eligible for citizenship.
